In the Apostolic Letter Porta Fidei (The 'Door of Faith'), Pope Benedict XVI announced that the universal Church would celebrate a Year of Faith beginning on October 11th 2012 and ending on the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Universal King on November 24th 2013. This is a special year in which we are asked as to reflect on the gift of faith as the universal Church, episcopal conferences, diocesan level, parish, community, association, movements and individually.
The Year of Faith has a three-fold focus: knowing our Catholic faith, living it out sacramentally within the church and in the world, and sharing the faith through evangelization and catechesis. This is a wonderful opportunity to plan what you might do to grow in those three areas. Each of us as baptised christians has a personal responsibility to grow and deepen our own knowledge of our faith and also have a responsibility to share that knowledge. Each of us, by virtue of our baptism are called to be "prophet, priest and king". But often we find it difficult to make the time to sit, reflect and pray. This Year of Faith gives us the opportunity to "rediscover the journey of faith so as to shed ever clearer light on the joy and renewed enthusiasm of the encounter with Christ".
October 11th 2012 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council and the 20th anniversary of the publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Both of these occassions mark important moments in the history of the church in the last fifty years; moments of history to which we are only now beginning to see bear fruit. The anniversary provides us with an opportunity to sit with some of these documents and see what they actually say; as opposed to what we and others think they say!
